Anti-Phishing Working Group

Panda Software Becomes New Member of

Anti-Phishing Working Group

This alliance, formed by the main representatives of the IT security

industry,

aims to fight against the threat of phishing.

Glendale, CA - January 13, 2005 - Panda Software, one of the leading

developers of solutions against viruses and intruders has become a

Corporate Sponsor of the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), a powerful

association made up of the main representatives of the IT security

industry, which aims to combat phishing scams.

Phishing scams have become one of the biggest threats to Internet users.

These consist of using false email messages, pop-ups and websites to steal

personal financial data, such as account numbers, passwords or PINs, etc.

Phishing is a problem that is growing rapidly. According to APWG data,

these kinds of attacks increased by 180 percent between April and May 2004,

demonstrating that more cyber-crooks are turning to this kind of bait to

commit fraud online.

APWG Chairman David Jevans said, "We are proud and honored to have Panda

Software join us in this effort, especially given the growing role of

worms, viruses, Trojan horses and other Internet threats as a medium for

delivering phishing attack payloads. The October arrests of Trojan-hackers

in Brazil who stole tens of millions from consumers, reminds us of the

growing relevance of counter-malware expertise in the fight against

phishing."

Peter Cassidy, Secretary General of the Anti-Phishing Working Group, said

"The Anti-Phishing Working Group is proud and honored to have Panda

Software as a new sponsoring member. The company's long-term research into

viruses, worms, Trojans and other malware will be tremendously useful,

informing our investigations into the next phase of phishing attack’s

evolution. What’s more, Panda Software brings a European perspective and

great depth of experience to the table, broadening the AWPG’s view of the

phishing threat worldwide and enriching our group’s internal dialogue.”

“Phishing frauds are getting more and more common and it would not be an

exaggeration to say that they are one of the main threats faced by users

when they browse the Internet or use email. In fact, the consequences of

falling victim to one of these scams are disastrous, as they affect both

personal and corporate finances. Panda Software, true to its commitment to

protect all users against all kinds of Internet threats, has decided to

join this working group, as we see a joint effort from the main

representatives of the industry as the most effective way to combat

phishing,” explains Luis Corrons, Head of PandaLabs at Panda Software.
