PR measurement that separates activity from evidence
Media monitoring, coverage quality, message pull-through and business context - without invented advertising value.
Could we talk this week?ANSWER FIRST
What should PR measurement distinguish?
PR measurement should distinguish activity, coverage quality, message pull-through and documented business context. It should name the source and method for any share-of-voice, impression or advertising-value figure rather than treating every mention as equal.
The problem
A large mention count can conceal weak relevance, poor message pull-through or no useful action. Measurement becomes misleading when it treats every mention as equal or converts unsupported reach into advertising value. The first task is to define the source, metric, time window and decision the report should support.
What does PR measurement include?
- Media monitoring and source-quality review
- Coverage quality and message pull-through coding
- Share-of-voice analysis when a defensible comparison set exists
- Activity-to-business-outcome reporting with evidence boundaries
Relevant experience
Historical reporting work includes source-based impact, prominence, product mindshare and share-of-voice analysis for Trend Micro. The underlying report and method remain the boundary for any claim. Source
How an engagement works
I define the measurement question, source set, comparison group, coding rules and reporting period before calculating results. Reports can distinguish activity, outlet relevance, message pull-through, sentiment or tone where the source supports it, and documented business actions. I do not present advertising value, impressions or share of voice without a documented source and method.
The first 30 days
- Days 1–7: agree the business question, source set, time window, comparison group and definitions.
- Days 8–15: code the coverage, message pull-through, outlet relevance and evidence quality using a repeatable sheet.
- Days 16–30: deliver the first report with source notes, limitations, decision implications and a reusable reporting template.
Questions
What can PR measurement show?
It can show documented activity, outlet and story relevance, message pull-through, source-supported tone or sentiment, share of voice when the comparison set is defensible, and business actions linked to the coverage record.
Do you report advertising value or impressions?
Only when a named source provides the figure and its method is clear. I do not invent advertising value, impressions or equivalent figures from a headline count.
How do you define coverage quality?
The report can code relevance, outlet type, message pull-through, prominence, named source or spokesperson, link status and the action the coverage enabled. The rules are agreed before the results are interpreted.
Can measurement prove business outcomes?
It can connect activity to documented actions or outcomes when the record supports that connection. It cannot claim causation simply because coverage and a business result occurred in the same period.
